Ilanz lies in the Surselva region of Graubünden, on the Vorderrhein where the valley widens between steep mountain slopes. It calls itself the first town on the Rhine, counting from the river's sources, since no settlement further upstream ever held town rights. On a map the Rhine forms a strong, flowing line across the frame, with the compact town gathered on its banks.
The historic centre shows a tight cluster of streets and small squares, the remains of a medieval town, while newer quarters and roads spread along the valley floor. The Romansh name Glion is in everyday use, and since 2014 Ilanz has been the centre of the larger municipality of Ilanz/Glion, which joined it with a number of surrounding villages.
Road and the Rhaetian Railway follow the valley through the town, linking it with Chur downstream and Disentis upstream.
