Imaichi Map Poster
Imaichi was an independent city in Tochigi Prefecture until 2006, when it merged with Nikkō and neighbouring towns to form the present city of Nikkō. It grew as a stop on the old roads to the Tōshōgū shrine, and on a map its centre still reads as a road town: a long spine of streets with side lanes branching off toward rivers and farmland.
Its defining feature is the Cedar Avenue of Nikkō, a network of historic roads lined with tall Japanese cedars planted in the seventeenth century. Several of these avenues meet near Imaichi, so the map shows old routes arriving at the town from different directions. The nearby valleys of the Daiya and Kinu rivers add soft natural lines to the composition.
An Imaichi map poster is a portrait of the approach to Nikkō rather than of the shrine district itself. Railway lines cross the centre, rice fields and small settlements spread across the plain, and to the north the land begins to rise toward the mountains. It gives a quieter, everyday view of a region most people know only from its temples.

The core keeps the pattern of a former post town: buildings strung along a main road, with narrow plots and lanes running back from it on either side.
Rivers and rail
Railway lines and river channels cut across the plain in clean diagonals and give structure to the open land of fields and scattered villages around the town.
