Kerch occupies the eastern tip of the Crimean peninsula, on the western shore of the narrow strait that links the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov. The city wraps around Kerch Bay in a long arc, its streets running down toward the waterfront and piers, while industrial districts and suburbs stretch north and south along the coast. From above, the shoreline defines almost everything.
At the heart of the city rises Mount Mithridates, a hill holding the remains of Panticapaeum, founded by Greek colonists in the sixth century BC and later capital of the Bosporan Kingdom. That history makes Kerch one of the oldest cities in Europe. A long monumental staircase climbs the hill from the old centre, and on the map the surrounding streets curve around its slopes.
