Il-mappa
Kotel’nikovo lies in the far south of Volgograd Oblast, on the steppe between the Don and the Kalmyk lowlands. It grew up around a station on the railway running south from Volgograd. That origin still shows on the map: the track cuts a firm diagonal through town, and the residential streets are arranged in orderly blocks alongside it.
A small river winds past the town, and its loops and shallow banks are the only curves in an otherwise rectilinear plan. Beyond the last houses, the land opens into wide steppe fields crossed by shelterbelts and dirt roads. The contrast is strong: a dense rectangle of streets surrounded by broad, nearly empty ground.
The town's name is known in Second World War history. In December 1942, the German relief attempt toward the encircled forces at Stalingrad was launched from the Kotel’nikovo area. A Kotel’nikovo map poster shows none of that drama directly, only the quiet order of streets, rail and river. It can be a fitting way to remember a place with a long memory.
The main line runs straight through town, with sidings and a station yard alongside it. It is the strongest single line on the map, and the street grid is aligned to it.
A small steppe river loops past the settlement, adding soft, irregular curves. They contrast with the straight streets and field boundaries around them.
Outside the town, large rectangular fields and lines of windbreak trees stretch to the edge of the frame. They leave generous white space around the dense centre.
