Kure sits on the Seto Inland Sea southeast of Hiroshima, where a deep natural harbour is enclosed by hills that rise almost directly behind the waterfront. The map shows a narrow band of flat land packed with streets and docks, while residential lanes climb the slopes in tight curves and short spurs. Beyond the bay, islands and channels break the water into a complex pattern.
The city became one of Japan's main naval ports in the late nineteenth century, and its shipyards built the battleship Yamato, launched in 1940. That history is told at the Yamato Museum by the harbour, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force still bases ships here. Large dry docks and quays remain some of the boldest shapes on the map.
To the south, Kure's territory extends across bridges onto islands in the Inland Sea, adding coastlines, coves and small harbours to the composition.
