Il-mappa
Likasi sits on the high plateau of Haut-Katanga, roughly between Lubumbashi and Kolwezi, in the middle of Congo's copper and cobalt belt. From above, the town looks like a set of planned districts separated by open ground, rail sidings and low ridges. A denser commercial core forms where the main roads meet. The layout still follows the logic of a settlement built around ore processing rather than trade.
Under Belgian rule the town was called Jadotville. The name became widely known in 1961, when a company of Irish UN peacekeepers was besieged there during the Katanga crisis. The state mining company Gécamines has long shaped the local economy. Its works and processing sites are still among the largest shapes you can pick out on the map around the residential quarters.
A Likasi map poster shows all of this in plain lines: the curve of the railway, the regular blocks of older neighbourhoods and the looser pattern of newer housing spreading toward the hills. Without colour or labels, the town becomes a study in how industry organises space. It is the kind of plan that rewards a slow look.
A railway line crosses Likasi on its way through the Copperbelt. On the map its long, gentle curve works as a spine that the surrounding streets line up with.
Older quarters keep the regular blocks of a colonial-era plan, while later neighbourhoods spread out in a looser, more organic pattern at the edges of town.
Large processing sites and mining land appear as broad open areas. They give the composition strong blocks of empty space between the residential streets.
