Marl sits on the northern edge of the Ruhr, and its map shows a town that grew from mining colonies rather than a single old core. Separate districts are linked by wide roads and green corridors, and the centre was built in the postwar decades as a deliberately modern ensemble. To the north, the Wesel–Datteln Canal and the valley of the Lippe draw long horizontal lines.
The town hall, designed by the Dutch architects van den Broek and Bakema, is one of the landmarks of German postwar modernism. Marl is also the home of the Grimme Institute, which awards the Grimme Prize for television. In the south, the extensive Chemiepark Marl forms a dense block of industrial roads and rail sidings.
