Mayfair is one of the most clearly bounded districts in London. Park Lane and Hyde Park mark the west, Oxford Street the north, Regent Street the east and Piccadilly the south, so the map shows an almost rectangular block of streets. Inside, the plan was laid out mainly in the eighteenth century by landowning estates, with Grosvenor Square and Berkeley Square as its two large open spaces.
The name comes from the May Fair, a fortnight-long fair held on the land in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, before development began. Today the district includes Savile Row, long associated with bespoke tailoring, and Bond Street with its galleries and shops. In the London edition of Monopoly, Mayfair is the most expensive property on the board.
A Mayfair map poster is a study in order. Streets meet at right angles, squares open at regular intervals, and mews lanes run neatly behind the main terraces. The irregular lanes of Shepherd Market and the green mass of Hyde Park on the left of the frame add contrast. It is a composed, balanced image that suits a formal room.

A second, longer open space sits closer to Piccadilly. It is lined with tall plane trees and balances Grosvenor Square on the other side of the grid.
Shepherd Market
Near the southern edge, a small cluster of narrow lanes and tiny squares breaks the regular pattern, marking roughly where the old May Fair was held.
