Methuen sits in the Merrimack Valley of northeastern Massachusetts, bordering Lawrence to the south and New Hampshire to the north. Like its neighbours, it grew around mill-era industry, and the older centre near the Spicket River still has a denser, more traditional street pattern than the suburban neighbourhoods around it.
On a map, Methuen is a varied mix: a compact historic core, curving residential streets that follow the rolling ground, ponds and wooded patches, and the wide corridors of Interstates 93 and 495 cutting across the city.
