Neustadt in Holstein lies on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein, on the shore of Lübeck Bay. It was founded in the thirteenth century as a planned town, and its old centre still shows that origin: a regular pattern of streets around a large market square, with the church close by.
Water shapes the rest of the map. The harbour opens onto the bay to the east, and to the north of the old town spreads the Binnenwasser, a lagoon connected to the sea. The brick Kremper Tor, one of the old town gates, still stands at the edge of the historic centre.
