Newark on Trent grew at a crossing of the River Trent and the old Great North Road in Nottinghamshire. On the map, the river and its branches curve along the western side of the centre, the castle stands at the water's edge, and a network of older streets leads to one of the largest market squares in England. Railway lines and the A1 bypass form outer boundaries.
The castle, now a ruin facing the river, is where King John died in 1216. During the English Civil War, Newark was a Royalist stronghold that withstood three sieges, and traces of earthworks from that period survive around the town. The market square, surrounded by old buildings and coaching inns, is still the centre of town life.
