Passau is known as the City of Three Rivers. The Danube arrives from the west, the Inn from the south and the small Ilz from the north, and all three meet at the edge of the old town. On a map, the historic centre fills a narrow peninsula between the Danube and the Inn. Its streets are packed tightly along a ridge that ends in a sharp point at the confluence.
The skyline is dominated by St. Stephen's Cathedral, a Baroque church whose organ is among the largest in any cathedral in the world. Across the Danube, the fortress of Veste Oberhaus sits on a steep wooded hill and looks down over the peninsula. The Inn's water is lighter in colour than the Danube's, so the confluence is visibly two-toned. The poster shows it as lines.
Being on the water has its costs: Passau has been hit by severe floods, most recently in 2013. The historic centre sits on a narrow strip of land between two rivers. Its lanes are tightly packed and run along the peninsula toward the confluence.

The fortress rises on a steep hill across the Danube from the old town. On the map, the slopes and winding access roads frame the centre from the north.
