Richmond is the seat of Madison County, set on the southeastern edge of the Bluegrass region where gentle pasture begins to rise toward the Appalachian foothills. From above, the downtown forms a small, regular grid centred on the courthouse, with main roads leaving it in several directions toward Lexington, Berea and the surrounding countryside.
The largest single feature on the map is Eastern Kentucky University, whose campus occupies a broad area south of downtown with curving drives, residence halls and playing fields. The town is also remembered for the Battle of Richmond in 1862, one of the more decisive Confederate victories in the Civil War, fought on the farmland around it.

Interstate 75 runs along the western side as a firm line, commercial strips follow the approach roads, and residential subdivisions with looping cul-de-sacs fill in the rest, thinning out quickly into fields and wooded creeks.
