Rickmansworth sits in southwest Hertfordshire at the meeting of three rivers, the Colne, the Gade and the Chess, which give the local district its name of Three Rivers. On the map the town centre is a compact cluster of streets on slightly higher ground, while the valley floor to the south is dominated by water.
The Grand Union Canal runs through the valley here, with a lock at Batchworth. Beside it lies the Rickmansworth Aquadrome, a series of lakes formed from former gravel pits. Their irregular shapes, together with the rivers and the canal, make this one of the most watery maps on the edge of London, full of curving outlines and islands.
Rickmansworth is served by the Metropolitan line and grew with the Metro-land suburbs of the early twentieth century, its residential streets spreading up the valley slopes.
