Saddleworth is not one town but a cluster of villages on the western slope of the Pennines: Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross, Diggle, Greenfield, Denshaw and others. On a map they appear as small knots of streets linked by winding valley roads. Between them lie fields and pasture divided by dry-stone walls, and to the east the open moor rises steeply.
The River Tame runs south along the valley floor. Beside it runs the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which disappears at Diggle into the Standedge Tunnel, the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in Britain. Above Greenfield, reservoirs such as Dovestone sit in a bowl of moorland. Their clean outlines are among the few hard shapes in a landscape otherwise drawn by its contours.
Historically part of Yorkshire and now within Greater Manchester, the parish keeps a strong identity of its own, not least through its brass bands and the Whit Friday marches. Dovestone and its neighbouring reservoirs lie in the hills above Greenfield. Their dams and shorelines form bold, simple shapes against the loose contour lines of the surrounding moor.
Village clusters
Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross and the other villages each form their own small street pattern. Country lanes link them across the valley sides instead of one continuous town.
