Somerset lies in Bristol County, Massachusetts, on the west bank of the Taunton River where it widens into Mount Hope Bay. On the map, the river is the dominant feature, a broad channel separating the town from the city of Fall River on the opposite shore, with Somerset’s residential streets filling the land behind it.
Two major crossings link the two towns: the Braga Bridge, which carries Interstate 195, and the Veterans Memorial Bridge to the north. At the town’s southern tip, Brayton Point was long home to a large coal-fired power station, closed in 2017, and the peninsula remains a distinctive shape on the bay. Much of Somerset is quiet suburban streets and cul-de-sacs.
