Il-mappa
Sukhodilsk lies in the south-east of Luhansk region in Ukraine's Donbas, close to the larger town historically known as Krasnodon. Like many settlements in the coalfield, it grew around mines in the twentieth century, and on a map its streets form a fairly regular pattern of planned blocks, with industrial sites, rail lines and conical spoil heaps marking the land around it.
The surrounding steppe is open and gently rolling, cut by shallow gullies and small watercourses. The town's name refers to a dry valley, and the terrain matches it: long, low slopes with few natural features to disrupt the orderly street pattern. Since 2014 the town has been under Russian occupation, and many former residents now live elsewhere in Ukraine or abroad.
For those people in particular, a Sukhodilsk map poster can be a way of holding on to a place that is difficult or impossible to visit. The printed streets record the town as it is laid out, including the housing blocks, schools and the roads to the mines. In black and white, the map becomes a sober, dignified record rather than a decoration.
Residential areas follow the regular layouts typical of mid-twentieth-century mining towns, forming neat rectangles of streets that dominate the centre of the poster.
Waste heaps from coal mining rise at the edges of town and appear as distinct shapes on the map, a characteristic landmark of the Donbas landscape.
Railway tracks link the mines with the wider network, drawing long industrial lines that separate neighbourhoods and lead out across the open steppe.

Għaliex Sukhodilsk
Many people hang this map because it shows a home they had to leave. It keeps the names of familiar streets close, and its restrained style lets memory rather than the image itself carry the weight.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be edited to include the town's name in Ukrainian, a date or a dedication. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and preview the layout free before downloading for $9.
