Yong’an lies in the Chongqing municipality in south-western China, in the hilly country on the eastern side of the Sichuan basin. Here long parallel ridges run across the landscape, and farmland fills the valleys between them. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets set on the lower ground.
The terrain shapes everything on the map. Roads avoid the steep ridges and follow the valleys, often in long curves. The slopes around the town are shaped into terraces and small fields, and on the map they look like a fine, uneven grain.

Winding roads
Roads leave the town along the valley floors, curving to avoid the steepest ground. They are the main lines connecting Yong’an to neighbouring settlements.
