About this Mueda map poster
Mueda sits on the Mueda Plateau in Cabo Delgado Province, in the far north of Mozambique near the Tanzanian border. The plateau rises sharply above the lowlands around it, and the town occupies high ground where the roads converge.
It is the heartland of the Makonde people, known across East Africa for their wood carving. Mueda also holds an important place in national history: in June 1960 colonial forces killed protesters there, and the Mueda massacre became a key moment in the movement toward Mozambique's independence. A memorial in the town marks the event.
