Streetcar line
The Toden Arakawa Line runs through the neighbourhood at street level, a thin curving track that recalls the tram network Tokyo once had across the city.

The map
Machiya Map Poster & Print
Machiya is in Arakawa ward, in the north-east of Tokyo's inner city. From above it is a fine-grained texture of tiny blocks and narrow lanes, packed with low houses, workshops and small apartment buildings. Rail lines cross the area on their own alignments and slice through the street pattern at confident angles.
The neighbourhood is a junction for several lines, including the Chiyoda subway, the Keisei line and the Toden Arakawa Line. The Toden, now also called the Tokyo Sakura Tram, is one of the city's last surviving streetcar routes, and its track winds through Machiya at street level between homes and shops.
A Machiya map poster shows everyday Tokyo rather than the famous skyline districts. The density of the lanes gives the print an almost textile quality. Rail corridors and larger roads act as the few bold strokes in a finely detailed pattern.

Fine-grained blocks
Very small blocks and alleys create a dense, intricate texture, typical of shitamachi residential districts in the city's north-east.
Rail crossings
Subway, private railway and tram lines converge here, and their straight corridors cut clear diagonals through the tight street pattern.

Why Machiya
A map that means something
For anyone who lived in Arakawa, commuted through Machiya station or rode the tram past its shops, this map records a real, lived-in part of Tokyo. It is a detailed and understated portrait of home.
You can title it with a neighbourhood name, add a date or a line in the subtitle, and keep the coordinates. Noir and Blueprint bring out the dense linework, and Paper feels softer.
