The map

About this Naini Tāl map poster

Naini Tāl is a hill town in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is built around a single natural lake, Naini Lake, in a valley at roughly two thousand metres. The British developed it as a hill station in the nineteenth century, and it later served as the summer capital of the United Provinces. It is still one of northern India's best-known mountain resorts.

From above, the lake dominates everything. Its long, slightly curved shape sits at the centre of the map, with the Mall Road running along one shore and the town climbing the hillsides around it in tight switchbacks and stepped lanes. Mallital at the northern end and Tallital at the southern end are the two main parts of town, linked around the water.

Steep slopes rise to viewpoints such as Naina Peak, one of the highest points around the lake, and the Naina Devi Temple stands on the northern shore. A Naini Tāl map poster frames that remarkable composition, a pool of water held in a bowl of hills. It makes a lovely memento of family holidays or school years in the hills.

01

Naini Lake

The lake's long crescent is the dominant shape on the map, a smooth form held by roads and buildings on every side and instantly recognisable to anyone who has visited.

02

Mall Road

This lakeside promenade links Mallital and Tallital. Its line traces the water's edge and gives the poster a clear, elegant spine.

03

Hillside switchbacks

Roads and footpaths zigzag up the slopes around the lake in dense, looping patterns that show how steep the terrain is and how carefully the town was fitted to it.

Why Naini Tāl

A map that means something

Naini Tāl holds a special place for honeymooners, for families who return every summer and for former students of its boarding schools. A map of the lake and its hills captures the town's shape in a way that photographs of single views rarely can.

Write your own title and subtitle, perhaps with the year of a first visit, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. All six sizes, from A3 to 24×36″, come as watermark-free PNG and PDF files for $9.
