The map

About this Nakhon Luang map poster

Nakhon Luang is a district town in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, in Thailand's central plains. The Pa Sak River runs through the district, and on the map the settlement is strung along it: roads and buildings follow the banks, and bridges connect the two sides. Around the town, the flat, low-lying land is divided into fields and irrigated plots.

The district takes its name from Prasat Nakhon Luang, a palace built in the seventeenth century by King Prasat Thong of Ayutthaya. It was said to be modelled on Angkor, and its remains still stand near the river. The site links this small town to the wider history of the Ayutthaya kingdom, whose former capital lies a short distance away.

A Nakhon Luang map poster is organised by the river. The Pa Sak's curves give the drawing its main line, the town settles along both banks, and the surrounding plains appear as a finely divided pattern of roads and canals. In a monochrome print, the combination of meandering water and straight farm lines makes a strong, balanced image.
