The map

About this Nakhon Phanom map poster

Nakhon Phanom stretches along the west bank of the Mekong in northeastern Thailand, directly across the river from the Lao town of Thakhek. From above, the town is long and narrow, with streets running parallel to the water and a riverside road tracing the bank. The broad Mekong fills one side of the map, and the far shore and its limestone hills lie beyond it.

The river defines the town's identity. A riverside promenade looks out toward the mountains of Laos, and just north of the town the Third Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, opened in 2011, crosses the Mekong to Thakhek. The province is also home to Phra That Phanom, one of the most revered Buddhist stupas in the Isan region.

A Nakhon Phanom map poster is shaped by that great river. The orderly grid of the town presses against the wide, pale ribbon of the Mekong, and the result is a strong, simple composition. It reads as a portrait of a border town where daily life faces the water and the country on the other side.
