About this Neuss map poster
Neuss sits on the west bank of the Rhine directly opposite Düsseldorf, and its map is defined by its relationship with the river. The Erft flows in from the south-west to join the Rhine here. Between the old town and the main stream lie long, straight harbour basins, part of one of the busiest inland port systems in the region.
The city traces its origins to Novaesium, a Roman military camp established around 16 BC, which makes it one of the oldest towns in Germany. The medieval centre keeps its compact outline around the Quirinus-Münster, a large Romanesque basilica. The Obertor, a surviving city gate, still marks where the old walls once stood.
