The map
Newala Kisimani is in Tanzania's Mtwara Region, on the Makonde Plateau near the border with Mozambique. The town sits close to the plateau's southern edge, where the land drops away toward the Ruvuma river valley. On a map, that position gives it a clear boundary on one side, where the street network gives way to the escarpment and open country below.
Kisimani is Swahili for at the well. The name suits a plateau where water has long been precious, even though rain falls there each year. The town's roads are few and practical. A main route crosses the plateau, and smaller tracks branch between houses and cultivated plots, forming a loose, open pattern rather than a dense grid.
A Newala Kisimani map poster is spare by nature. The composition depends on a small number of lines, the edge of the land and the space around them. For people from the Makonde Plateau, or anyone who has stood at the escarpment looking south into Mozambique, it captures a specific sense of place in very little ink.

A few main roads and many smaller tracks spread through the town. They create a loose, airy layout rather than a dense urban block.
The Ruvuma, marking the border with Mozambique, lies to the south. It gives the town its wide outlook and its frontier position.
