Bujaru lies in northeastern Pará, in the lowlands east of Belém, where the rivers of the Amazon estuary region spread into a dense web of channels. From above, the town is a small grid of streets on a riverbank. Forest, farmland and a network of narrow creeks surround it and wind in every direction across the flat terrain.
Water shapes daily life here. Boats are still an important way of moving between riverside communities, and many homes and small settlements line the waterways rather than the roads.
