Ko e mape
Fujioka sits in southern Gunma, where the flat Kantō Plain meets the mountains to the west. From above, the northern and eastern parts of the city are level, with streets, rail lines and farmland. Towards the south-west, the ground rises into wooded hills and valleys. The Kanna River runs along the southern edge and marks the boundary with Saitama Prefecture.
The city takes its name from wisteria, fuji in Japanese, and wisteria is its symbolic flower. Fujioka is also known for cherry trees that bloom in winter as well as spring. On a larger scale, it is an important transport node, where the Kan-Etsu and Jōshin-etsu expressways meet at the Fujioka junction. The Fujioka map poster shows both the town and these long routes.
In black and white, the map has two distinct halves. The dense, practical grid of the plain sits on one side, and the soft, branching lines of hill roads and streams sit on the other. The river curve and the sweep of the expressways add bold strokes between them.
The river runs along the southern edge of the city, separating Gunma from Saitama. Its broad channel gives the print a strong lower edge.
The Kan-Etsu and Jōshin-etsu expressways meet here. Their long sweeping curves and interchange loops cut clearly across the grid of the plain.
The land rises into wooded hills and valleys to the south-west. Roads branch along the streams, softening the edge of the map.
