Khapat lies on the edge of Porbandar, in the Saurashtra peninsula of Gujarat, a short distance from the Arabian Sea. On a map it forms part of the wider urban area around the city, with dense residential streets meeting open land, salt flats and low coastal ground. Roads link it closely to the centre of Porbandar.
Porbandar is best known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, and the region has a long history as a seafaring and trading coast.
