Linxi lies within the Tangshan conurbation in northeastern Hebei, on the flat land between the Yan Mountains and the Bohai coast. From above, it is defined by large-scale infrastructure: wide avenues, railway lines and extensive industrial sites divide the land into big blocks, with residential compounds in between.
The area around Tangshan has been shaped by coal mining for over a century, and Linxi is part of that industrial landscape. The wider city was largely rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake, which explains the broad, planned streets and the regular layout of many of its neighbourhoods.
