Mānāvadar lies in Junagadh district in Gujarat, on the broad, mostly flat plain of the Saurashtra peninsula. The surrounding landscape is agricultural, known for groundnut and cotton, and on a map the town appears as a compact built-up area with roads extending outwards across the fields to neighbouring villages.
The town was once the seat of a small princely state. In 1947, its ruler, like the Nawab of neighbouring Junagadh, declared accession to Pakistan, and the state was subsequently taken over by India, a brief but notable episode in the history of partition. Traces of the older town remain in the tighter streets at its centre.
