Marhaura is a town in Saran district in northern Bihar, on the broad alluvial plain north of the Ganges. The land here is almost perfectly flat and intensively farmed, and the map shows it. The town is a compact tangle of winding lanes and bazaar streets, surrounded by a fine mesh of field boundaries, village paths and scattered ponds.
The town has an industrial side that is unusual for its size. It was long associated with sugar milling and confectionery production. More recently it became the site of a diesel locomotive factory set up by Indian Railways with General Electric, which builds high-horsepower engines for freight trains across the country.
