Prokuplje is the main town of the Toplica District in southern Serbia, in the valley of the Toplica River about 25 kilometres west of Niš. It is one of the older towns in the region and takes its name from Saint Procopius, whose church stands in the town. Around it, the valley opens into farmland and vineyards, with hills rising on either side.
On the map, the river runs through the valley in a series of gentle bends, and the town spreads along it. A denser centre of short, irregular streets gives way to broader residential blocks. Close to the centre, the hill known as Hisar rises above the town, crowned by the remains of a medieval fortress, and the streets curve around its base.
