Water tanks
Shallow reservoirs built to store monsoon rain lie around the town. They appear as smooth, rounded shapes against the fields and give the map its most striking forms.

Sīra lies in Tumakuru district of Karnataka, on the dry, open plateau northwest of Bengaluru. From above, the old town is a dense tangle of lanes around the market and the remains of its fort. Newer streets spread out along the main roads, and beyond them the land is dotted with tanks, the shallow reservoirs typical of the region, together with fields and scattered rocky outcrops.
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Sīra served as the seat of a Mughal province in the southern Deccan, and it later came under the rule of Hyder Ali. Traces of that period survive in the town's older monuments. Today Sīra is a busy regional centre on the national highway linking Bengaluru with Pune, and the highway forms a clear axis past the town.
A Sīra map poster shows a classic Deccan pattern. The compact historic core is surrounded by looser growth, the highway cuts a long straight line across the frame, and the rounded outlines of the water tanks add broad, calm shapes to the plateau. It is a spare, graphic image of a town shaped by trade routes and water.

The Bengaluru–Pune national highway runs past Sīra in a long, confident line. It links the town to the wider network of southern India.
Near the market and fort the streets narrow into a dense, irregular web. It is a sharp contrast to the wide roads of the newer districts.
