Tarma lies in Peru's Junín region at around three thousand metres, in a valley on the eastern side of the Andes. The mountains shape the map completely. The town's centre fills the valley floor in a compact grid of streets around the main square, and the built-up area climbs as far up the slopes as it can before giving way to steep ground and fields.
The town is often called the Pearl of the Andes, known for its mild climate and flower growing. It is especially known for its Holy Week celebrations, when residents lay out long carpets of flower petals along the streets for the processions. Tarma also sits on the route from the highlands down toward the Amazonian edge of central Peru.
A Tarma map poster shows that clear contrast between the orderly grid of the valley floor and the irregular roads winding up and out through the mountains. It is a compact, well-framed print. It suits people from Tarma and the Junín region, and travellers who remember the flower carpets and the valley light.
The historic centre fills the flat bottom of the valley with a regular pattern of blocks around the main square, tightly contained by the terrain.
Steep ground rises on all sides, where the street grid breaks up into scattered houses, terraced fields and winding tracks.
Roads twist out of the valley toward the highlands and down toward the eastern lowlands, drawing long curving lines at the edges of the map.

Ko e ha Tarma
Tarma is remembered for its flowers, its Holy Week and its setting in the mountains. A map preserves the shape of the valley and the grid of streets in a way that feels close to how it was experienced: a small town completely held by the Andes.
