Viacha lies on the Bolivian Altiplano, about 3,850 metres above sea level, southwest of El Alto and La Paz. The land is almost completely flat and open, so on a map the town appears as a clear, rectangular grid set into a wide, empty plain. The distant mountains remain outside the frame.
Straight roads link the town to El Alto and to villages across the Altiplano. A railway line crosses the plain and passes through the town. Beyond the last blocks, the network thins out into field boundaries and dirt tracks, which gives the town a very sharp outline.
Viacha has long been an industrial town, known in particular for cement production, and it has become more closely tied to the growing metropolitan area of La Paz and El Alto. A Viacha map poster presents its grid on the high plain in minimal black and white.
