The map
Nkhata Bay sits on the western shore of Lake Malawi in the country's Northern Region, and its map is defined by the water. The town wraps around a small, deep bay, with headlands and rocky points reaching into the lake and steep, wooded hills rising right behind the shoreline.
Because the ground rises so quickly, the streets are few and winding, following the curve of the bay and climbing up the slopes in switchbacks. The harbour, market and main road cluster near the water, while houses are scattered along the hillsides. A Nkhata Bay map poster shows the crisp edge of the shore and the small town fitted into the space between lake and hill.
The town is a port of call for the lake ferry that serves communities along the shore, and it has long attracted travellers who come for the clear water and the quiet coves. On a wider crop, the coastline continues in a series of bays and points, with the vast open lake taking up most of the sheet.
A small, deep inlet of Lake Malawi forms the town's centre, its curved shoreline standing out clearly against the open water.
Steep, wooded slopes rise right behind the lakefront, so roads twist upward and houses are spread out across the hillside.
The harbour serves the lake ferry that connects shoreline communities, making Nkhata Bay one of the key stops on the northern lake.
