Gan River

Ji’an lies in central Jiangxi on the Gan River, the province's main river, which flows north through the city toward Poyang Lake. The river dominates the map, wide and gently curving, with the older centre on one bank and newer districts developing across the water. Bridges link the two sides at intervals.
Away from the river the terrain mixes low hills and valleys. The street pattern is fairly regular near the centre and less so toward the edges. Lakes, ponds and green spaces break up the residential blocks. At poster scale the Gan reads as a broad blank ribbon, with the city arranged in layers on either side of it.
The prefecture governed from Ji’an includes Jinggangshan, the mountain area closely tied to the early years of the Chinese Communist revolution. Several bridges cross the Gan at intervals. They draw strong lines between the two halves of the city and give the river a rhythm on the printed map.
