Northport lies on the north bank of the Black Warrior River, directly across from Tuscaloosa. On the map, the river is the defining feature. It is a wide band that curves between the two cities, crossed by a few bridges that tie Northport's streets to the larger city on the south bank.
The older part of town, near the river, has a modest downtown with a simple grid. Further north, the plan loosens into winding residential roads, cul-de-sacs and wooded lots. They follow the gentle hills and creeks of west Alabama. Highways run out towards the countryside and give the map its longer lines.
