Oława lies south-east of Wrocław, where the Oława River flows toward the Oder. Water is the first thing the map shows. The Oder's broad channel and floodplain run beside the town, while the smaller Oława curves through, and green floodland and old river arms fill the spaces between them.
The historic centre is a compact medieval plan built around a rectangular market square with its town hall. Parallel streets lead out to where the old walls once stood. The town's castle, associated with the Silesian Piast dukes, stands near the centre. Later districts, the railway and industrial areas spread outward across the flat ground.

Two rivers
