The map

About this Nytva map poster

Nytva lies in Perm Krai, west of the Urals, on the river of the same name. Like many Urals towns, it grew around an ironworks founded in the eighteenth century, and the factory dam created a long pond that still shapes the town. On a map, the water is the central feature, a long, narrow shape with streets clustered along its banks.

The factory district stands near the dam, with larger buildings and railway sidings. Around it, older streets of wooden houses spread out, while blocks of Soviet-era apartments fill newer areas. Forests and fields surround the town, and the river continues beyond the dam toward the Kama.

A Nytva map poster captures the typical layout of a Urals factory town, where industry, water and housing were planned together. The shape of the pond gives the map its focus, while the grid of streets and the forest edge frame it. It is a picture of industrial heritage in the landscape of the western Urals.

01

Factory pond

The long pond created by the ironworks dam is the centre of the map, a smooth, elongated shape with the town gathered along its shores.

02

Dam and works

The factory stands next to the dam, where the pond meets the river, a cluster of large buildings that marks the town's origins.

03

Forest edge

Woodland surrounds the town on several sides, forming a broad, empty frame that emphasises the compact shape of the settlement.
