The map

About this Okunoya map poster

Okunoya lies in central Ibaraki prefecture, a short distance southwest of Mito, in the gently rolling country at the northeastern edge of the Kanto plain. Its map is not that of a dense city. Houses and roads are spread out, mixed with rice paddies and low wooded areas, in a pattern typical of rural Japan.

Roads here follow field boundaries and the edges of low ground, so they rarely form a strict grid. Small clusters of houses line the main routes, and patches of woodland on higher ground appear as blank areas between them.

An Okunoya map poster captures a loose, open rhythm: lines gathering here and there, with plenty of space around them. In black and white it looks almost like a sketch, calm and uncluttered, and it gives a faithful picture of the countryside in this part of Ibaraki.

Houses along the roads

Homes gather in small clusters along the main roads instead of forming a single dense centre, which creates a scattered pattern across the print.

02

Paddies and fields

Rice paddies and farmland fill much of the area. On the poster they appear as open space divided by narrow roads and paths.

03

Low wooded ground

Patches of woodland on slightly higher ground break up the farmland. On the map they show as empty areas with no streets at all.

Why Okunoya

A map that means something

The print suits people with family in rural Ibaraki, or anyone who prefers the quiet of the countryside to the density of the city. Its open composition feels restful and suits minimalist interiors.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, including in Japanese. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand suit the rural landscape especially well.
