The map

About this Ongwediva map poster

Ongwediva lies in the Oshana Region of northern Namibia, between the towns of Oshakati and Ondangwa. The three towns form an almost continuous urban strip along the main road. On a map Ongwediva appears as one section of that line, with newer neighbourhoods laid out on both sides of it.

The land here is extremely flat and crossed by oshanas. These are shallow seasonal watercourses in the Cuvelai basin that fill after good rains and stay dry for much of the year. Where they appear on the map, they are pale channels running between built-up areas. They determine where roads and houses can be built.

The town is known for its annual trade fair, a major event for northern Namibia, and it has grown quickly as a centre for education and housing. An Ongwediva map poster records a young town that is still taking shape, where planned streets meet the open plain and much of the ground remains unbuilt.

01

Main road corridor

The road linking Oshakati and Ondangwa runs through Ongwediva. It is the spine of the map, and most of the town's development is arranged along it.

02

Oshana channels

Shallow seasonal watercourses wind across the level ground. They break up the street pattern and give the poster soft, irregular shapes between built-up blocks.

03

New planned suburbs

Residential extensions on both sides of the corridor follow regular layouts of straight streets and plots, a sign of the town's steady recent growth.
