The map

About this Ono map poster

Ono sits in a basin in eastern Fukui Prefecture, ringed by mountains that frame the town on every side. The historic centre was laid out in the late sixteenth century by Kanamori Nagachika as a castle town, with streets arranged in a regular, board-like grid. That orderly plan survives today and has earned Ono the nickname of a little Kyoto of the Hokuriku region.

Above the grid, Echizen Ono Castle stands on Kameyama, a small hill at the edge of the old town. On some autumn mornings fog fills the basin while the castle rises clear above it, an image that has made it known as a castle in the sky. Spring water is another local signature, with clear springs such as Ochoboshimizu used by residents for generations.

An Ono map poster shows the clarity of a planned castle town better than most photographs. The grid of the old quarter, the rounded hill of the castle and the farmland stretching to the mountains make a balanced composition, well suited to anyone who has walked its morning market street or watched the clouds settle in the basin.

01

Castle-town grid

The old centre keeps its regular chequerboard of streets from the late 1500s, a tight pattern of blocks and temple lanes that stands out sharply in black and white.

02

Kameyama hill

The small hill crowned by Echizen Ono Castle rises at the edge of the old town, drawn as a compact, rounded mass among the straight streets.

03

Mountain basin

Paddy fields fill the flat floor of the basin around the town, with roads and rivers leading toward the surrounding mountains that close the view on every side.
