About this Ōshū map poster
Ōshū is a city in southern Iwate Prefecture, formed in 2006 by merging Mizusawa, Esashi and several neighbouring towns. The Kitakami River flows north to south through the city and divides it into two halves. On the map the river is a long, calm line, with the compact centres of Mizusawa and Esashi on either side of it.
West of the river, the Isawa alluvial fan is known for its dispersed settlement pattern. Farmhouses stand alone among rice paddies, each surrounded by its own windbreak of trees rather than grouped into villages. From above this produces an unusual texture: a fine scatter of dots and short lanes across open fields.
Ōshū has a long association with Nambu ironware, the heavy cast-iron kettles produced in Mizusawa for centuries. More recently it has become known as the hometown of baseball player Shohei Ohtani.
