About this Sakata map poster
Sakata sits on the Sea of Japan coast in Yamagata Prefecture, where the Mogami River meets the sea. From above, the river's wide final stretch and the port basins frame the older town, whose streets form a fairly regular grid on the flat ground. Beyond them the rice fields of the Shonai Plain spread out in neat rectangles, and a long, gently curving shoreline of dunes and pine belts runs along the coast.
For centuries Sakata was a major port for shipping rice. The Sankyo Soko rice warehouses, with their row of zelkova trees along the river, remain from that era. The Homma family of merchants became famous for their wealth here. To the north, Mount Chokai rises above the plain, and the city's area also includes the island of Tobishima offshore.
