The map
Ouinhi is a commune in the Zou department of southern Benin, east of the historic Abomey plateau. It is mainly rural. On a map, the settlements appear as small clusters linked by unpaved roads and tracks, with farmland and scattered vegetation between them, rather than as one continuous town.
The eastern side of the commune reaches toward the valley of the Ouémé, Benin's longest river. The lowlands along the river are wetter and more open than the higher ground to the west, and the difference affects where people live and farm. Settlement is concentrated where the land is easier to work and roads can pass.
An Ouinhi map poster shows that pattern: villages as small knots, roads as fine lines running between them, and a large area of open land that suggests the scale of the countryside. It is a modest, honest map of an agricultural place, and it appeals most to people with family ties to the commune.
Settlements appear as separate small groups of streets and compounds, joined by a network of rural roads across the commune.
The commune extends toward the Ouémé valley in the east, where lower, wetter ground changes the pattern of fields and settlements.
Much of the frame is open agricultural land, which gives the map a spare, airy look with only a few lines crossing it.
