The map

About this Paech’ŏn-ŭp map poster

Paech’ŏn-ŭp is the administrative centre of Paech’ŏn County in South Hwanghae Province, in the south-west of North Korea, a short distance inland from the Yellow Sea. It lies on the Yŏnbaek Plain, one of the country's main rice-growing areas, and the landscape around it is almost entirely flat, divided into regular fields, long embankments and straight water channels.

The map reads as a study in contrast: a compact built-up core with a handful of main streets, and around it the fine geometric pattern of paddies and channels stretching towards the edges of the frame. In black and white this farmland grid becomes the real subject, almost like a woven textile laid around the town.

For many viewers North Korea is known only through a few images of its capital. A Paech’ŏn-ŭp map poster offers something different: an ordinary county town seen through its streets and fields, drawn without commentary. It suits collectors of unusual places and anyone with family roots in Hwanghae, a province many families left during the Korean War.

01

Yŏnbaek Plain

The flat agricultural plain around the town is one of North Korea's key rice areas. Its regular fields and embankments give the poster an almost geometric texture from edge to edge.

02

Compact town core

The built-up area is small and concentrated, with a few main streets at its centre, clearly set apart from the farmland that surrounds it on every side.

03

Water channels

Irrigation channels and small watercourses cross the plain in long lines, visible as fine threads that link the fields and lead the eye across the composition.

Why Paech’ŏn-ŭp

A map that means something

This is a map for people interested in how places look when stripped of their usual imagery: a county town defined by fields and water, not monuments. It also speaks to families with roots in South Hwanghae who want a lasting record of the land.

The title, subtitle and coordinates line are all editable, so you can use a spelling of the name you prefer or add a family date. Choose from five styles, including Paper and Blueprint, and download the HD files for $9 or order a print.
