The map

About this Pärnu map poster

Pärnu stands where the Pärnu River enters Pärnu Bay, on Estonia's southwestern coast. The map is organised around that meeting of water. The river cuts the town in two and meets the sea between a pair of long breakwaters. The old town sits just back from the south bank, and a wide, green resort district of villas and parkland stretches toward the beach.

Estonians call Pärnu their summer capital. It has been a spa and seaside resort since the nineteenth century, known for its sandy beach, mud baths and wooden villas. The old town keeps the Tallinn Gate, a seventeenth-century gate in a surviving section of the earthworks. Nearby, Rüütli street runs through the heart of the historic centre as a pedestrian spine.

A Pärnu map poster works beautifully in monochrome. The bay becomes a clean open field, the river a strong diagonal, and the beach district a soft pattern of streets and parks. It is a natural choice for people who spent their summers here, got married by the sea, or still think of the breakwater walk whenever they picture Estonia.

01

River mouth breakwaters

Two long moles guide the Pärnu River into the bay. On the poster they are thin parallel lines reaching out into open water, one of the town's most recognisable shapes.

02

Old town and Tallinn Gate

South of the river, a compact grid of historic streets surrounds Rüütli. The line of the old fortifications can still be traced near the Tallinn Gate.

03

Beach and resort district

Between the old town and the sea, a wide area of parks, villas and quiet streets leads to the long sandy shore. It gives the map a relaxed, open edge.
