The map

About this Palpalá map poster

Palpalá lies a short distance southeast of San Salvador de Jujuy, in a green valley in the far northwest of Argentina. On a map the town stretches along the Río Grande, with neighbourhoods laid out in regular blocks on the flat ground and more irregular streets climbing onto the lower slopes. Hills rise on several sides, closing the view and framing the town neatly.

The town grew around the Altos Hornos Zapla steelworks, founded in the 1940s to produce iron and steel from ore mined in the nearby mountains, and the plant's large site still stands out as a distinct block on the plan. Planned workers' neighbourhoods around it add their own regular geometry, set apart from the older centre and the roads toward Jujuy.

Palpalá is often called the mother of industries, a nickname linked to that steelworks and its place in Argentina's industrial history. A Palpalá map poster captures the relationship between river, valley and industry in one clean image, suited to anyone who wants to remember this corner of Jujuy by its shape rather than its postcards.

01

Río Grande valley

The river runs along the town on its way southeast, its broad, braided bed appearing on the map as a wide open band beside the streets.

02

Steelworks site

The Altos Hornos Zapla plant occupies a large area of the town, a block of long rectangular structures and rail lines that looks unlike anything else on the plan.

03

Surrounding hills

Slopes rise close to the edges of town, so the built area follows the valley floor and the map shows a clear boundary between streets and open hillside.
