Papar is a town on the west coast of Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo, south of Kota Kinabalu. It sits near the mouth of the Papar River, where the flat coastal plain meets the South China Sea, and its map shows a small town centre bordered by water, beaches and wide stretches of agricultural land.
The surrounding plain is well known for rice cultivation, and paddy fields form a large, regular pattern around the town. The Sabah State Railway, the only railway line in Borneo, passes through Papar, adding a straight line that runs through the town and along the coast.
